“What happens to my data after cancellation?” Your server stays available until the end of the month you paid for. After that, it is decommissioned and its disks are securely erased. We do not back up local storage unless agreed in writing, so anything you have not copied elsewhere by then cannot be recovered. Personal data such as billing records is handled separately, under our privacy policy.

## What happens, step by step

1. **You cancel** by choosing "Cancel at end of period" on the server's page in your dashboard, before your next renewal date; see [how to cancel](https://overgpu.com/help/renewals-and-cancellation). You are not charged again, and you can still choose "Keep renewing" until the end of the paid month.
2. **Your server keeps running** until the end of the paid month, with the same access as before. Use this time to copy your data.
3. **The server is decommissioned** when the paid period ends.
4. **Its disks are securely erased** before the hardware is used again, so your data never meets the next tenant.
5. **Your customer and billing records** are kept as described in our privacy policy (see below).

> An unpaid renewal can also end a server. If your balance does not cover a renewal, you have 72 hours to add funds; after that the server may be suspended, and a server suspended for 7 days ends and its disks are securely erased. Keep your balance funded, or back up before the renewal date.

## Back up first

Local storage is not backed up by us unless agreed in writing. That is true throughout your rental, but it matters most at the end. Copy datasets, checkpoints, logs and configuration to storage you control, for example with rsync over SSH, run from the machine that receives the copy:

```
rsync -aP root@SERVER_IP:/data/ ./backup/
```

Then compare checksums on both sides, for example with `sha256sum`, before the end of your paid month. Our [NVMe storage guide](https://overgpu.com/docs/storage-nvme) covers local storage on your server.

Start early. At 1 Gbit/s, copying 2 TB takes roughly four and a half hours, and your own connection may be slower. Copying data off the server counts as outbound traffic, which is included up to 20 TB per month on single-GPU plans and 50 TB on 8-GPU servers; see [bandwidth and egress](https://overgpu.com/help/bandwidth-and-egress).

## Secure erasure

Once a server is decommissioned, its disks are securely erased before the hardware goes to another customer. We cannot restore anything after that point.

While your rental runs, you keep all rights to the data you store, and we do not access it except when necessary to operate or repair the service at your request, or when required by law. These rules are in sections 8 and 11 of our [terms of service](https://overgpu.com/legal/terms).

## Your personal data

Personal data we hold about you, such as billing records, is kept separately from your server and follows our [privacy policy](https://overgpu.com/legal/privacy):

- **Account data:** while your account is open. When you close it, we delete your sign-in data, sessions and SSH keys.
- **Customer and billing records:** for the duration of the contract, then as long as required by accounting and tax law.
- **Requests that did not lead to an order:** 24 months after our last exchange.
- **Web server logs:** 30 days.

You can edit your profile, billing details and email address in Settings in your dashboard, and close your account from Settings once you have no active server or pending order. If you have unused paid credit, request a refund from the Billing page before you close the account; see [refunds](https://overgpu.com/help/refunds). Depending on where you live, you also have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal data, as set out in our privacy policy.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you restore my files after my server is erased?

No. Local storage is not backed up by us unless agreed in writing, and disks are securely erased after the paid period, so copy everything you need before your paid month ends.

### Does OverGPU look at the data on my server?

Only when necessary. We do not access it except to operate or repair the service at your request, or when required by law.

### How do I delete my personal data?

Close your account from Settings in your dashboard once you have no active server or pending order; we then delete your sign-in data, sessions and SSH keys, and keep billing records only as long as the law requires. Your profile, billing details and email address can also be edited in Settings.
